As Fully Expected, Resident Evil Is Getting a Reboot

Post by cosmo »

" Just a couple of days after we posted our interviews with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter‘s Paul W.S. Anderson and Ali Larter, Germany’s Constantin Film has announced at Cannes that they are rebooting the zombie video game film franchise, according to Variety. There are no details on whom they plan on getting to star in the new adaptation or direct it, but Constantin Film Chairman of the Board Martin Moszkowicz is adamant that it’s happening.

Now, the question that immediately comes up is “How will it factor into the already released six films?” Paul W.S. Anderson wrote all six entries since the 2002 first film and directed four of them but it’s not known if he will be involved. If my interview with him (click on the link above) is any indication, he has no interest in going back to that series. However, it’s a confirmed paycheck as these films do exceptionally well, especially overseas. Hell, The Final Chapter took in $160 million in China alone. That’s nothing to scoff at.

However, what would be FAR more interesting is if they did a complete blank slate situation and started the series over from scratch. That way they would be able to adapt the stories we’ve seen in the video games and perhaps take them in new directions. Those of us who have played the games know what happens in that universe. If we have that same foundation – and hopefully the same characters – then whoever writes the film(s) can venture into new and interesting territories.

For example, the novelizations did a thing where every odd numbered book was an adaptation of the games, but the even numbered books were original stories with the known characters. They were interesting in that they expanded the world of Umbrella, which allowed people like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton, Claire Redfield, and more to face off against weird creatures that were never in the games.
